Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the discount to see what you pay and how much you save. Work from a percentage off or a fixed amount off, add a second discount that applies to the reduced price, and include sales tax. If you already know both prices, switch to “Original and sale price” to find the percentage taken off.

How to use it
Choose what you know
Pick “Percent off” or “Amount off” to calculate a sale price, or “Original and sale price” to find the discount.
Enter the prices
Type the original price and the discount. Optionally add a second discount and a tax rate, and choose a currency for the display.
Read the result
The tool shows what you pay, how much you save and the percentage that represents, the price after the discount and the tax.
Check the working
The steps underneath show each stage of the calculation, so you can compare it with a receipt or a price tag.
Example: an extra discount on a sale item
A jacket is priced at 120 with 30% off, and a voucher takes a further 10% off the sale price. Choose “Percent off”, enter 120 and 30, tick “Add a second discount” and enter 10. The price falls to 75.60, a saving of 44.40, which is 37% off the original, not 40%.
Why two discounts do not add up
A second percentage is taken off the already-reduced price, so the total saving is smaller than the two percentages added together.
| First discount | Second discount | Total off the original | Not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 10% | 19% | 20% |
| 20% | 10% | 28% | 30% |
| 30% | 10% | 37% | 40% |
| 50% | 20% | 60% | 70% |
Limits and limitations
- Calculations are made in whole cents, and each step (each discount, then tax) is rounded half up to the nearest cent, as a till would. A shop that rounds differently, or only once at the end, can differ by a cent.
- Tax is added after the discount as a single percentage. The tool does not handle prices that already include tax, tax that varies by item, or tiered rates.
- Discounts of more than 100%, negative prices and discount amounts larger than the price are rejected.
- Currency choice changes only the symbol and layout. No exchange rates are used and amounts are not converted.
- The tool does not know a shop's rules, such as whether vouchers can be combined or whether a discount applies to every item.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, and subtract it from the price. A 25% discount on 80 saves 0.25 × 80 = 20, so you pay 60.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. If something dropped from 80 to 60, the saving of 20 is 25% of 80, so it is 25% off.
Is tax added before or after the discount?
This tool adds tax after the discount, which is how most sales tax works: you pay tax on the price you actually pay. Rules differ by place and by type of discount, so check your receipt.
