How to use it

  1. Choose a category

Pick length, weight and mass, temperature, area, volume, speed, time or digital storage.

  2. Enter a value and pick the units

Type the number, then choose the unit you have and the unit you want. Use Swap to reverse them.

  3. Read the answer

The result is shown with up to 10 significant digits, and the table below lists the value in every unit of the category.

Example: kilometres per hour to miles per hour

Choose Speed, enter 100, set From to kilometre per hour and To to mile per hour. The answer is about 62.13711922 mph, because one mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres.

Digital storage prefixes

Storage units cause the most confusion, because two systems share similar names. This converter shows both.

Limits and limitations

  • Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits. Very large or very small values use scientific notation.
  • Cups, spoons, pints, quarts and gallons are US customary units, with the imperial gallon listed separately. Other countries use different cups and spoons.
  • Time uses a year of 365.25 days and has no months, because months differ in length.
  • Temperatures below absolute zero are rejected. Temperature conversions are for the temperature itself, not for differences between temperatures.
  • Some operating systems report storage in binary units but label them with decimal names, so a number can differ from what you see on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything I enter sent to a server?

No. The value you enter is processed by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website. This site can load advertising or analytics scripts, but only after you accept them in the cookie notice. They are separate from the tools, which never pass the files or text you work with to them.

Are the conversions exact?

Factors come from exact definitions where they exist, such as 1 inch = 25.4 millimetres and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms. Computers store decimals approximately, so a result can differ from the exact value in the last digits, which are hidden by the 10-digit display.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32. The tool does this for you, and also converts Kelvin.

Why is a 500 GB drive smaller on my computer?

The drive maker counts 500 billion bytes. Some systems divide by powers of 1,024 and so show about 465 GiB, even though nothing is missing.
