How to use it

  1. Choose add or remove

Pick whether you are adding tax to a price, or taking tax out of a total that already includes it.

  2. Enter the amount and the rate

Type the price or the total and the tax rate that applies where you are buying.

  3. Read the result

See the amount before tax, the tax and the total, along with the formula.

Example: 100 at 8.25% sales tax

Tax is 100 × 8.25% = 8.25, so the total is 108.25. In the other direction, a total of 108.25 at 8.25% divides back to 100.00 before tax. The 8.25% is only an example rate.

Limits and limitations

  • You supply the rate. The tool has no tax tables, and rates can differ by location, product and date.
  • It handles one rate at a time. Items taxed at different rates, or tax on tax, need separate calculations.
  • Rounding on a real receipt may differ by a cent if the seller rounds per item instead of on the total.
  • The result is an estimate for planning, not financial, tax or legal advice. Check the real figures with your lender, adviser or tax authority before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For a total of 108.25 at 8.25%, divide by 1.0825 to get 100.00. Subtracting the rate from the total is a common mistake that gives the wrong answer.

Where do I find my sales tax rate?

Your state, provincial or local tax authority publishes it, and receipts usually show it. This tool does not look rates up.

Does this work for VAT and GST?

Yes, the maths is the same. The GST and VAT Calculator on this site adds quick rates for several countries.

Is my information uploaded?

No. Your numbers is worked out by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website.
