Keyword Density Checker

Paste the text of a page to see which words and phrases it uses most, how many times, and what share of all words each makes up. Add a target keyword to see how often it appears. The text is analysed in your browser and is not uploaded.

Check keyword density

Skips phrases that start or end with words such as “the”, “and” or “of”.

Paste some text to see which words and phrases it repeats.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text

Use the visible copy of the page. Counts update as you type.

  2. Set the options

Hide common words to see meaningful terms, and choose how many times a phrase must appear to be listed.

  3. Read the tables

Switch between single words, two-word and three-word phrases. Add a target keyword for an exact count, or download the results as a CSV file.

Example: spotting an overused phrase

A 300-word page repeats “cheap flights” 15 times, which is 5 percent of all words and sounds forced when read aloud. Reword some of those sentences. Keyword density is a way to notice repetition, not a target to reach.

Limits and limitations

  • Density is the number of uses divided by the total number of words. Search engines do not use a target density, so there is no ideal percentage to aim for.
  • Words are separated by spaces and punctuation, so languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese, are not split into words.
  • Phrases never run across a full stop or line break. Plurals and other word forms count as different words.
  • Only the visible text you paste is counted. The tool does not read headings, alt text or HTML.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your text is processed by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website. This site can load advertising or analytics scripts, but only after you accept them in the cookie notice. They are separate from the tools, which never pass the files or text you work with to them.

What is a good keyword density?

There is no ideal figure. Write naturally for readers, use the terms people would expect, and use this tool to catch repetition that sounds forced.

How is density calculated?

The number of times the word or phrase appears divided by the total number of words in the text, multiplied by 100.

Why are some common words missing?

By default phrases that begin or end with a common word such as “the” or “of” are hidden. Turn that option off to include them.
