UTM Link Generator

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link so your analytics tool can tell where visits came from. Enter the page address and the campaign details to get a correctly encoded link. Existing parameters and the part after # are kept. Nothing is sent to a server.

Build a campaign link

Where the visitor comes from: a site, a newsletter, a platform.

The kind of channel: email, social, cpc, banner.

Usually the paid search keyword.

Tells apart links or ads that point to the same page.

Reports treat “Email” and “email” as different sources, so one case keeps them together.

Enter the page address and the campaign details to build the link.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page address

Paste the full address of the page you are linking to.

  2. Fill in the campaign details

Source and medium are required. A campaign name is strongly recommended. Term, content and ID are optional.

  3. Copy the link

Copy the finished link and use it in your email, advert or post. Keep names consistent so reports group correctly.

Example: a newsletter link

For https://example.com/sale with source “newsletter”, medium “email” and campaign “spring_sale”, the link becomes https://example.com/sale?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale.

The parameters

These are the standard UTM parameters recognised by most analytics tools.

Limits and limitations

  • UTM tags only work where the visit is measured by an analytics tool that reads them. Nothing is tracked by this tool.
  • Do not use UTM tags on links between pages of your own site, because they can start a new session and overwrite where the visitor originally came from.
  • Names are case sensitive in reports. The lowercase option helps keep “Email” and “email” together.
  • Links that carry tags are longer. Some systems cut links over about 2,000 characters.

Frequently asked questions

Is my link stored or sent anywhere?

No. Your link is processed by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website. This site can load advertising or analytics scripts, but only after you accept them in the cookie notice. They are separate from the tools, which never pass the files or text you work with to them.

What are UTM parameters?

They are labels added after a question mark in a link. Analytics tools read them to attribute the visit to a source, medium and campaign.

What happens to parameters already on my link?

They are kept. If the link already has utm_ parameters, those are replaced by the values you enter, and the tool tells you so.

Should I use spaces in values?

Avoid them. Spaces become %20 in the link, which is hard to read. Use underscores or hyphens, and keep one style.
