Character Counter

See exactly how many characters your text contains, with and without spaces, plus letters, digits, punctuation, lines and size in bytes. Pick a common limit, such as an SMS or a search-result title, and the tool tells you how many characters you have left or how far over you are.

Counts update as you type. Your text stays in this browser.

How to use it

  1. Add your text

Type or paste into the box. The counts update as you edit.

  2. Read the breakdown

Characters with spaces is the main figure. The tool also shows characters without spaces, letters, digits, spaces and line breaks, punctuation and symbols, and the size of the text in UTF-8 bytes.

  3. Choose a limit

Select a preset or enter your own maximum. A message below the counts says how many characters remain or how many you are over.

  4. Edit until it fits

Shorten the text and watch the message change. Use Clear to start again.

Example: writing a page description for search results

Pick “Meta description: 160”, paste your draft and trim until the message says you have characters left. Search engines choose how much of a description to show, so about 155 to 160 characters is a guide rather than a guarantee.

Limits and limitations

  • A character here is what a person sees as one character. Some websites and apps count differently, for example by counting emoji, links or non-Latin letters as more than one, so treat the presets as a guide and confirm in the place you are posting.
  • The SMS preset is the limit for a single message using basic characters. Messages with emoji or many non-Latin letters fit fewer characters per message.
  • Search-result titles and descriptions are truncated by pixel width, not by character count.
  • You can paste text but not open a file.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces and line breaks counted?

Yes in “Characters” (with spaces), and no in “Characters without spaces”. Tabs and line breaks are treated as whitespace and also left out of the no-spaces figure.

How are emoji counted?

An emoji counts as one character, including emoji with skin tones and joined family emoji. They also take more bytes than ordinary letters, which the “Size as UTF-8” figure shows.

What is the difference between characters and bytes?

Characters are what you read. Bytes are what is stored: a plain English letter is one byte, an accented letter is usually two, and an emoji is four. Some databases and APIs limit bytes rather than characters.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your text is processed by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website. This site can load advertising or analytics scripts, but only after you accept them in the cookie notice. They are separate from the tools, which never pass the files or text you work with to them.
